The latest Official Statistics on Road Conditions in Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 10 December 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on Road Conditions include data for Wales for 2007 up to 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 13 November 2008.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • 4.3 per cent of motorways and 5.8 per cent of trunk roads require close monitoring of their structural condition in 2009, a small reduction on 2008.
  • 4 per cent of Local Authority principal roads and 8 per cent of non principal/classified roads were in need of further investigation of their structural condition in 2008/09.
  • Skidding resistance is best for motorways, with less than 1 per cent at or below the investigatory level in Wales in 2008 with trunk roads at 9 per cent and Local Authority principal roads at 14 per cent.
  • Local Authorities spent £75.2m on structural maintenance of their road networks in 2008-09, £60.3m spent on planned structural maintenance. £12.6m was spent on the trunk road network on structural maintenance in 2008-09, £10.5m spent on planned structural maintenance.
  • Heavy lorry traffic as a proportion of all lorry traffic has risen to 53 per cent on trunk roads and 24 per cent on all non trunk roads.
