2001 Census of Population: First results on Travel to Work

The headline uses data taken from the 2001 Census of Population.

UK Statistics Authority Website Note: Figures stated below are based on people aged 16-74 in employment who usually travel to work. They do not take into account those who work mainly at or from home.

  • 78 per cent of people in Wales aged 16-74, who usually travelled to work, did so using a car or van, up from 72 per cent in 1991.
  • In 2001 11 per cent of people travelled to work 'on foot' and a further 2 per cent used a bicycle.
  • 6 per cent of people in Wales travelled to work by bus, minibus, coach or taxi and 1 per cent used rail.
  • Usage of cars or vans to travel to work varied from 68 per cent in Cardiff to 83 per cent in Flintshire.
  • The proportion of people who travelled to work 'on foot' ranged from 8 per cent in Flintshire to 16 per cent in Gwynedd, Powys and Ceredigion.
  • The proportion of people who travelled to work by 'public transport' (including rail, bus or taxi) ranged from 2 per cent in Powys to 14 per cent in Cardiff.
