Pedal Cyclist Casualties, 2008

The key points in this bulletin cover the following issues for all pedal cyclist casualties:

• The number of pedal cycle casualties has declined since 1979.
• The decline in pedal cycle casualties has been greatest in the 0-15 age category.
• Since 1999, almost one in five pedal cycle casualties have occurred in the Cardiff local authority.
• Pedal cyclists are more likely to be hit by a car than any other vehicle.
• The majority of pedal cycle casualties occur within 20 metres of a junction.
• The majority of pedal cycle casualties occur in 30mph zones.
• The majority of accidents occur in the second and third quarters.

The key points in this bulletin cover the following issues for child (aged 0-15) pedal cyclist casualties:

• The number of child (aged 0-15) pedal cycle casualties has declined since 1999.
• Since 1999, children have accounted for almost 2 in 5 of all pedal cycle casualties.
• The majority of child pedal cyclists casualties occur on roads with a 30 mph limit.
• Since 1999, 74 per cent of pedal cycle casualties aged 0-15 occur in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the year.
