The latest National Statistics on Road Casualties produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 24 June 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on Road Casualties include data for Wales for the period up to the end of December 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 25 June 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • During 2009, the number of people killed, seriously, or slightly injured in road accidents were at the lowest levels since records began in 1968.
  • During 2009 there were 7,126 road accidents involving personal injury recorded by the police in Wales 658 (8 per cent) fewer than in 2008.
  • These accidents resulted in 10,354 casualties, 832 (7 per cent) fewer than in 2008. Within this total:
    - 125 people were killed on Welsh roads in 2009, 17 (12 per cent) fewer than in 2008;
    - 1,096 people were seriously injured in 2009, 158 (13 per cent) less than in 2008;
    - 9,133 people were slightly injured, a decrease of 657 (7 per cent) compared to the previous year.
