Police Reported Road Traffic Fatalities, 2010

The key points (using the revised figures) from this release are:

• In 2010, road traffic fatalities in Wales were at its lowest (89) since 1968 when separate Welsh figures were first compiled.

When comparing the 94-98 average to 2010;

• Fatalities for motorcyclists and moped users fell by 12 per cent, whilst fatalities for pedestrians, pedal cyclists and car users fell by 69 per cent, 74 per cent and 66 per cent respectively.
• There was a 71 per cent fall in the number of child fatalities.  Fatalities amongst young people, aged 16 to 25, fell by 47 per cent; those for older people, aged 26 and over, fell by 61 per cent.
• The numbers of male fatalities have fallen by 54 per cent and the number of female fatalities by 71 per cent.
  

Revision note

The attached First Release represents the second revision of these data. The preliminary estimate published on 17 February 2011 showed that there were 89 fatalities on roads in Wales during 2010. This was revised upwards to 95 fatalities for the final estimate published on 25 May 2011. The figures have now been revised on 3 August 2011 down to 89 again. The reason for the latest revision from 95 to 89 is that South Wales Police have established that six fatalities in their area were the result of natural causes, rather than the associated traffic accident. The people involved were all car drivers and no other person was involved in any of these incidents.
