Welsh Transport Statistics, 2011 - Chapter 10: Sea Transport

The latest National Statistics on sea transport to Welsh ports produced by the Welsh Government were released on 21 February 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • In 2009, there were 7,728 ship arrivals in Wales. The number of arrivals has declined for the last 6 years resulting in the 2009 arrivals being 30 per cent lower than in 2003, and 10 per cent lower than in 2008.
  • Milford Haven and Holyhead each had around one-third of all these ship arrivals (35 per cent and 37 per cent respectively).
  • Roll-on/roll-off vessels accounted for over one half (59 per cent) of all ship arrivals in Wales.
  • In 2010 there were over 60 million tonnes of goods on foreign and domestic traffic at ports in Wales, 13 per cent more than in 2009.
  • Bulk fuels made up 90 per cent of all cargo in the major ports in Wales in 2010.
  • During 2010, there were 728,000 accompanied passenger vehicles to and from the Irish Republic, an increase of 4 per cent compared to 2009.
  • During 2010, there were just under 3 million sea passenger movements to and from the Irish Republic, 6 per cent more than in 2009.
