The latest National Statistics on Finance and the Economy produced by the Welsh Government were released on 10th January 2013 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on Finance and the Economy include data for Wales for the period up to the end of December 2011. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 15th November 2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • In 2011-12 it is forecast that the Welsh Government will directly spend £411 million on transport; within this total, £193 million was on the trunk road network in Wales and £184 million on support for the rail industry in Wales. This is 11 per cent lower expenditure than in 2010-11
  • In addition to direct spending, the Welsh Government also makes direct grants to local authorities. These came to £157 million in 2011-12, a fall of over a quarter compared with the previous year
  • Table 2 shows total spending by local authorities using their Transport Grant from the Welsh Government. During 2010-11 total spend was £72 million; two authorities, Neath Port Talbot and Rhondda Cynon Taf accounted for two thirds of that spend
  • In 2012-13 the Welsh Government intends to start 3 new motorway and trunk road schemes, totalling 5.4 kilometres of road and at a total cost of £61 million
  • In 2011-12 it cost, on average, £33 thousand to maintain a kilometre of motorway/trunk road in South Wales; it cost £7 thousand in Mid Wales and £13 thousand in North Wales
