Manual for Streets

This document looks closely at how the relationship between buildings and the street is essential in creating places that are good for people.

Manual for Streets has been described as the most influential urban design document in 50 years and the missing link between planning policy and residential street design. This document applies in Wales.

The document advocates a strong movement hierarchy. It puts pedestrians and cyclists first, followed by public transport and its users and finally, other motor vehicles.

“Manual for Streets 2 – Wide Application of the Principles is a companion guide to Manual for Streets. It was published by the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) in September 2010.
